Oral Pathology Biopsy Service Laboratory

The diagnosis of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region can be achieved through clinical, radiological and/or microscopic examination. In addition to seeing patients in clinic, our Board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists offer microscopic diagnoses for tissue biopsies. This service is available to outside dentists and physicians. Histopathological analyses of tissue biopsies are done at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Dentistry Oral Pathology laboratory.

Where do I send biopsies?

Please send your tissue biopsy in a sealed 10% neutral formalin container. It is very important to include pertinent clinical information as well as the patient’s information by completing the following biopsy service form (include link to PDF). If multiple biopsies are done for the same patient, place each specimen in a different formalin container, identified by the anatomic site.

For your convenience, we offer free biopsy submission kits. These contain formalin vials, vial labels, biopsy service forms and pre-addressed envelopes. We strongly recommend the use of a mail courier service (UPS, Poste Dentaire, other) to send your biopsy to the following adress :

Service de pathologie buccale
Faculté de médecine dentaire
Université de Montréal
Pavillon Roger-Gaudry – Local A-209
2900, boul. Edouard-Montpetit
Montreal (Quebec) H3T 1J4

Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) studies for certain immune-mediated conditions (such as mucous membrane pemphigoid) require additional tissue submission in a special solution (Michel’s solution). We are happy to provide Michel’s solution upon your request.

To request free biopsy submission kits or vials of Michel’s solution, please contact us by email or by phone. We will expedite it to your practice as soon as possible. Please allow a few days for delivery.

How do I submit a case for histopathologic review and consultation?

We would be happy to review any problematic histopathologic slides. We understand that it may be challenging for general pathologists to interpret oral biopsy samples. If your clinical impression is inconsistent with a microscopic diagnosis rendered at a local hospital, it may be beneficial to the patient to request our review of the slides. Either the patient or the surgeon who performed the biopsy can request a review of the slides by contacting the initial general pathology laboratory. The slides and/or tissue blocks can be sent to the address above.

$120/case. The same price applies if more than one biopsy is done at the same time on the same patient. Some patients’ private insurance may reimbursed this cost.

The bill will be sent to you along with the histopathology report.

Processing delays

Following the reception of the tissue sample, the laboratory has the objective to provide you with a diagnosis within 7 business days.
